1 week already!

Hi,

It is almost *exactly* one week since I arrived here in Kauppila, with the kind lift with Antti Y from Oulu railway station - the last leg of my journey from North London. Short in distance, long in time and endurance!   :)

This week has gone very quickly, and yet many things done and experienced. I know Ii a little bit now, and especially getting to know some of the people around and about, and also the very very special river, and forest…. & the sounds too  :)   … so many sounds already captured on my minidisc device…. awaiting places in compositions to come soon. But not many sounds yet brought to me by yourselves; please email or visit to let me know - and/or send sound files - about your special sounds in and around Ii!   :)

I have been very lucky to have found two acoustic pianos so far - both in Kauppila, and thank you Sanna & Helena for offering for me to enjoy playing them (see mainly on this link for the improvised recordings: http://audioboo.fm/sponde_Ii). These brief times playing in this way - free improvisation, and only for a few minutes, and almost every day, is really a personal experiment. I want to see what I find, and how it might change during my residency stay here, and whether I change.

In the next week or so I will also start making compositions from the sounds I am recording as I walk or cycle around Ii - layers and sequences of real world sounds, to reflect the poetry of where we are.

There are other sonic things I hope to be exploring too … and more about that later …..  :))

I am so glad that I was here just in time to stand on the frozen river, and to ski in the forest (my first time on ski’s! - crazy isn’t it ! - slowly I am experiencing all these ‘normal’ things!   :)

Well, more here written sometime soon. Oh, and did you know you could post something on here too .. ?? …. don’t leave it all to me …. :)

best wishes,

Dave, aka Sponde

each day in my residency at Kulttuurikauppila, I hope to make a 5 minute improvisation …. usually on piano…. but maybe not always this instrument … (ps. Thank you to Sanna for your piano!  :)

This is ‘5-a-day-1’

ps. the next ones will be uploaded here ..: http://audioboo.fm/sponde_Ii

first day

well, I arrived late Sunday night after a slow journey with ‘night-buses’, train, plane, bus, train, and finally a car ride from Oulu to KulttuuriKauppila courtesy of Antti!

Mostly have been settling in, and working on a composition for an exhibition in Poland in collaboration with Joanna Hoffmann (http://wro2011.wrocenter.pl/site/en).

I have used actually a few sounds recorded yesterday here in Ii in this composition …  :) , and some sounds from a previous trip to Northern Finland…. more about all this later…. and who came to visit me on my first day, with some sound….

I am very happy to be here    :)

Audio Boo! :)

An easy way to get the sounds to me is to post audio messages on my AudioBoo page:

http://audioboo.fm/sponde_Ii

Please send me any local sounds that you really like, and/or inspire you, and/or you find curious/interesting, and/or are important to you …… and please can you write or say a sentence or two to explain things and describe where the sound is from or how it is made ?

How to do it ?: record or transfer an audio file on to your computer, and then on my audioboo page , look for the ‘start recording’ button on the right … and then follow the instructions to choose a file, and upload it.  Good luck!  :), and I look forward to listening to the sounds…..

nb. audio clips are limited to 5 minutes maximum by that website

A big thank you,   :)

Dave

  • … I am interested in the sounds in and around Ii :
  • …. your *special* sounds
  • …. Could you record any local/domestic sounds that intrigue you and/or that you like/treasure, and/or that are important to you? Also please can you write a sentence or two about the sounds? They can be short clips or longer recordings - email soundfiles (eg. mp3’s or whatever format) to me at dave@sponde.co.uk :
  • ...... and I will use them in a composition

This is a special ‘hello’ to everyone in Ii, and at kulttuurikauppila - especially those that I might meet during my residency in April 2011 (and September). My name is Dave Lawrence, aka Sponde - based in London, but somewhat of a wandering nomad…

Preparations and thoughts about spending time with you at kulttuurikauppila have been bubbling away for some time now …. and at last it is nearly here!  I am a sonic artist and based in London UK - you could find out more about my work and interests by checking www.sponde.co.uk
